  1. Greek `word'. a term in Greek, Hebrew, and
  2. Christian philosophy and theology. It was
  3. used by Greek philosophers as the embodiment
  4. of `reason' in the universe. Under Greek
  5. influence the Jews came to conceive of
  6. `wisdom' as an aspect of God's activity. The
  7. Jewish philosopher Philo (1st century AD)
  8. attempted to reconcile Platonic, Stoic, and
  9. Hebrew philosophy by identifying the logos
  10. with the Jewish idea of `wisdom'. Several of
  11. the New Testament writers took over Philo's
  12. conception of the logos, which they
  13. identified with Christ and hence the second
  14. person of the Trinity.
